As President of The Hartford's Personal Lines Agency Advisory Council (AAC), I'm excited to share my thoughts on our most recent AAC meeting, which was held March 7-9 in Keswick, VA. The AAC is an essential part of The Hartford community, through which The Hartford leadership team shares important strategic updates with the council and solicit our insight and guidance on areas of focus for driving profitable agency growth. I always leave our meetings feeling confident about the future of The Hartford and my agency's partnership with them, and this meeting was no different.
After an update on the company's strategy and goals presented by The Hartford's Personal Lines leadership, we began discussing trends in the broader market and the threats and opportunities those trends pose. To really bring the conversation to life and help us wrap our heads around some of the themes related to accident frequency and severity, we received a special tour of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the independent nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing deaths, injuries, and property damages from motor vehicle accidents.
At the IIHS, we observed an actual crash test and experienced new vehicle safety technologies like automatic emergency braking (AEB). It gave us a tangible sense of how our business could be impacted by trends including, more cars driving more miles, higher speed limits, and distracted driving. When you hear steel crashing into concrete and watch a car fold up like an accordion, you truly appreciate how real these trends are and how important vehicle safety technology is to help mitigate some of these impacts.
As a proud member of the IIHS, The Hartford is influencing policies that help keep drivers safe and auto manufacturers to make safer cars. These changes will benefit all of us – including our families, friends, and communities.
Personal Lines insurance is a key element of The Hartford's strategy and future success. Their commitment to owning the preferred mature market segment – and working with independent agents to achieve that niche status – is clear. Our input as partner agents has led to tangible enhancements to The Hartford's products, as well as investments in the tools, resources, and expertise that will make it easier for us to achieve profitable growth in the preferred mature market segment.
The AAC is designed to provide a voice for all Hartford agents to share ideas and feedback. As the AAC president, I'm committed to making sure our voice as agents is heard. Please feel free to reach out to me with your thoughts and questions.
