| COMPREHENSIVE DRIVING EVALUATION COVERAGE HELPS DRIVERS REGAIN CONFIDENCE

Drivers who've been in an auto accident may lose their confidence in driving or wonder if or when it's safe for them to get back behind the wheel.
A comprehensive driving evaluation (CDE) is a way to get answers to questions that drivers, their families or their doctor may have about their ability to continue to drive safely, or to evaluate their readiness to resume driving if they have stopped.
A Comprehensive Driving Evaluation is an assessment conducted by an Occupational Therapist (OT) who is uniquely trained to recognize changes associated with medical conditions and injuries and how they affect one's driving abilities. Evaluations generally take 2‑3 hours and include a physical, visual, cognitive and behind-the-wheel assessment. Based on results, the OT provides individualized advice to increase a person's safety and confidence upon returning to driving after a crash.
The Hartford Center for Mature Market Excellence conducted research with MIT AgeLab and found that a comprehensive driving evaluation is an effective but not well known tool, and the cost isn't covered by health insurance. This research led to the creation of the Comprehensive Driving Evaluation endorsement.
With The Hartford's coverage, if an insured driver is injured in a covered accident, The Hartford will reimburse for a Comprehensive Driving Evaluation by a licensed occupational therapist. The coverage, which contains a $500 limit, covers the full evaluation cost, in most cases. The insured has up to three years after the date of the accident to have the evaluation. The Hartford does not receive the results of the evaluation.
A CDE is valuable because its goal is to suggest ways to improve driving safety, make better decisions about driving ability, and boost confidence.
