FOR YOUR INFORMATION: RIDE SHARING EXPOSURES

TNCs typically offer a ride sharing service that uses smartphone applications and other internet-based platforms to connect passengers with drivers who use personal autos to provide transportation services for a fee (sometimes called a "donation").

The Hartford's Personal Automobile Policy's Liability Coverage contains an exclusion for an insured's liability arising out of the ownership or operation of a vehicle while it is being used as a public or livery conveyance. This exclusion applies during all phases of "ride sharing", starting with when the application is turned on, when a match for a ride is made, and when ultimately there is a fare paid in the auto. Similar exclusions also apply to all coverages in the policy, such as Medical Payments Coverage, Uninsured Motorists Coverage and Coverage For Damage To Your Auto.

The Hartford does not offer an endorsement which would provide the coverage necessary for TNC drivers who use their vehicles for ride share services. Ride sharing companies do not provide complete coverage during all phases of the transaction, and these risks should not be placed with The Hartford.

As always, we welcome your comments and suggestions; click here to send us an email or contact your Personal Lines Sales Representative.
